H2 Worker (1990) (DVD)

Stephanie blacks film 'H2 Worker'(70mins)(1990) is now officially available on dvd as from 28 April 2009.

Winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival, H-2 Worker reveals the systematic exploitation of Caribbean laborers by the Florida sugar industry from World War II through the 1990s. Each year more than 10,000 foreign workers were granted temporary guest worker (''H-2'') visas to spend six brutal months cutting sugar cane near Lake Okeechobee.

They were housed in overcrowded barracks, denied adequate treatment for frequent on-the-job injuries, and paid less than minimum wage. Faced with deportation and soaring unemployment in their home countries, workers had little recourse but to silently accept these humiliating conditions.

Clandestinely filmed in the cane fields and around the workers' barracks, H-2 Worker exposes this travesty of justice, which remained a well-kept secret for decades.

Originally released in 1990, today H-2 Worker provides an invaluable resource to understanding current debate over guest worker provisions of immigration legislation. While Florida's sugar cane cutters have mostly been replaced by mechanical harvesters, guest worker programs have expanded in agriculture, hotel, restaurant, forestry, and other industries.

H-2 Worker illuminates how the foreign worker program continues to benefit employers at the expense of vulnerable, underpaid workers.

A great film, one of my favourite Stephanie Black films, don't miss it....

Carrying the Swing (DVD) (Due out 14th July)

Yet another in the 'Reggae Nashville' dvd series, this time it's a treat for us reggae film fans. The documentary titled 'Carrying The Swing' to be released on the 14th July 2009 originally screened on UK TV back in 1998 on regional channel HTV West.

The documentary explores the Jamaican influence on Bristol's emerging music culture, which derived from Jamaican immigrants settling there during the 1950s and 60s. It reveals how musical institutions like the Sound System, Dub and Dancehall have become a way of life in Bristol. Featuring: Tricky, Roni Size, Treva Etienne, Red Rat, Lady G amongst others.

Don't miss it, we're all very lucky to get the opportunity to see these old films again, both Mike Wallington and Howard Johnson played a very big part in bringing Jamaican culture to the tv screens of the UK, but seem to get very little recognition for this.

Reggae Nashville - Black Hollywood (1984) (DVD)

Another film from the Reggae nashville Series is due to be released on the 14th July. The Reggae Nashville series is releasing the back catalogue of films from Mike Wallington and Howard Johnson who where two of the most prominent UK film makers on the subject of Black culture.

The dvd titled "Reggae Nashville - Black Hollywood" (75mins) offers an in-depth look at the role of black actors and entertainers in Hollywood throughout the decades. It does so, however, from the vantage point of the year it was made: 1984, a time when hip-hop culture was still in the final stages of its blooming nascency and only a handful of black stars held much mainstream national relevance.

First Sunday (2008)

I missed this film last year, only just heard about it today so decided it had to be worth a mention even though i'm 12months late. It's a feature film shot in the US featuring Paul Campbell (3rd World Cop, Dancehall Queen, Wide Sargasso Sea...) as a Jamaican gangster don. I've not seen the film yet so can't comment and i'm unsure of how big a part Paul Campbell plays but will certainly be checking this one out, below is a short clip......

Synopsis
David E. Talbert makes his directorial debut with this comedy about Durell (Ice Cube) and LeeJohn (Tracy Morgan), childhood friends with a knack for getting into trouble. Despite his continual bad decisions, Durell gets one thing right: he's a good father to his adolescent son. When he learns that the boy's mother, his ex-girlfriend, Omunique (Regina Hall), needs $17,000 to buy her beauty shop or she’ll leave Baltimore and move to Atlanta, he's determined to get her the money to keep his son in his life. Meanwhile, LeeJohn needs big money fast to pay off some bad guys. Durell and LeeJohn decide that the collection plate of their local church holds the answer to their money woes. But their attempt to rob the church is foiled in progress: the money is already missing, and the would-be burglars didn't realise there would be people at the church. Finding themselves with a group of parishioners and choir members at their mercy, Durell and LeeJohn have to make some decisions about exactly what kind of men they want to be.FIRST SUNDAY also makes a statement about the role of the church in urban areas and its importance within the community. Keith David is Deacon Randy, who has grandiose plans for moving the church to a less urban neighbourhood. Chi McBride stars as Pastor Mitchell, and Malinda Williams is his strong-willed daughter, Tianna, who wants First Hope Community Church to stay right where it is and expand its services. Loretta Devine is Sister Doris, the parish secretary and foster mother with a heart of gold. Ice Cube and Morgan have good rapport as the bickering buddies, with Morgan's silliness providing loads of comic relief, but Katt Williams is the scene-stealer as Rickey, the flamboyant choir director with something to say about everything and everyone.

One Love: Word, Sounds & Powah (DVD Trilogy)

At last we have news of Howard Johnson's documentary dvd release. As mentioned a few months ago we told you about the planned dvd release of 'Rockers Roadshow' which was the 10 part series made by Howard Johnson, and also the planned release of some of his other films. One of the other most sought after films of his after Rockers Roadshow is the 'One Love' series which was made in 1988.

The three documentaries are now being released on dvd and should be available from the 19th May.

Description:
Rastafarian religion has been much misunderstood and rarely celebrated with force and abandon. In these three documentary films, the late Jah Bones sets out the Rasta agenda and illustrates it with drums, music, poems and praises from dedicated Rasta interpreters like Jah Shepherd, Ras Anum Iyapo and Cosmo Ben Imhotep. Shot in London and Nottingham in the early 90s, the three films form a unique document of Rasta history, beliefs and artistic creation.

PART ONE: Nyabinghi Blood & Fire - Filmed at the Rastafari Universal Zion HQ in Tottenham, London, nyabinghi is the sacred drumming ritual that calls on thunder, lightning, brimstone, blood and fire to burn and destroy the weakheart and promote the righteous. This is a once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity to see a real nyabinghi, with its spiritual African heartbeat, its verbal aggression to chant down Babylon, and its sheer power.

PART TWO: Blues For Rastfari - Shot mainly at the Simba Project, Woolwich, London, it deals with the historical dimension and roots of Rastafari - in the Empire of Kush, 400 BC in Central Africa, in the mix of African and Christian Biblical traditions during slavery, including pocomania in Jamaica, with the rise of Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association and the persecution of early pioneers in the maroon tradition like Howell at Pinnacle, Jamaica. It culminates in the reception given to Emperor Haile Selassie at Kingston Airport and the eventual globalization of the faith.

PART THREE: Word Sounds & Powah - Shot in London and at Matismela, in the Marcus Garvey Centre, Nottingham, this episode describes various notions of livity - Rasta as a way of life, as a life-force, as a sense of well-being, as a receptacle of love and creation, as humility in the face of human and corporate greed, and as a teaching which opposes isms and schisms. Musical interpretation is provided by The Naturalites, who, amongst other praises to Jah, sing their classic anthem Picture On The Wall.

Track Listing:
Tear Down Babylon, Shine Your Light In The Valley, Rasta Revolution, Black Liberation Day, Rastaman Beat Down Babylon By Nyabinghi Drums Of RUZ.
Clap Your Tiny Hands And Rastaman Beat Down Babylon By Jah Bones On Drums & Vocal.
Song Of The Motherland By Ras Anum Iyapo, Drum & Vocal.
I Love Jah, Picture On The Wall, The Way I Feel, Jah Is Marvellous By The Naturalites.

Jamaica's - Killer Cops (new documentary)

Photo: Armed Kingston policeman at work.
A new film has recently been made titled "Killer Cops" which is all about Jamaica's police force, focusing on Kingston's police.

The 20min film highlights the corruption and brutality amongst the Kingston police force. The film only looks at a handful of recent cases but these type of crimes are happening everyday in Jamaica.

Jamaica has a long history of political violence, although it has tapered off in recent years. In 1980 nearly 900 people died in violence leading up to elections.

In the film we get to see deputy commisioner Mark Shields who was sent over from Scotland Yard to Jamaica several years ago to help get the force back on track. He openly acknowledges the problems the force is facing and could understand why some people are calling for the whole Jamaican police force to be disbanded, but explained how this wouldn't be a feasible option due the fact the country needs policing, but instead he will be tackling the problem from within.

Photo: Jamaica Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas, right, speaks as his Deputy Mark Shields, left, at a press conference in Kingston 2007

This is one of at least 3 films that i can think of which have been made in the last 12 months on the subject of Kingston's police force. I hope that they help to highlight the problems and help to rid the force of corruption.

Jamaica For Sale

Jamaica for Sale, by Esther Figueroa and Diana McCaulay, counters the dominant view that tourism is the savior of the Jamaican people. Lively and hard hitting, with powerful voices, arresting visuals and iconic music, Jamaica or Sale documents the environmental, economic, social and cultural impacts of unsustainable tourism development. As Jamaica is irreversibly transformed by massive hotel and luxury condominium development, Jamaica for Sale both documents this transformation and tries to turn the tide.

“Through a combination of interviews, archival footage, and coverage of tourism-related events such as work stoppages and communities' meetings with resort developers, Jamaica for Sale presents a compelling portrayal of an industry in crisis, one that is perpetuating a radically uneven distribution of tourism benefits.”
Jenny Burman, "Transnational Yearnings: Tourism, Migration and Diasporic Culture"
*******************************
Jamaica for Sale takes a sharp look at the environmental, economic, and social impacts of tourism, including

* The cumulative impacts of poorly regulated large-scale development on water quality, depleted marine species, and degraded shoreline habitats

* The social impacts of the privatization of the public sphere with the removal of access by Jamaicans to beaches and shoreline

* The social and environmental impacts of uncontrolled development in areas with little to no social and economic infrastructure

* The economic impacts of relying on low-wage, unskilled labour and remittances from Jamaicans abroad as the model for economic development, while promoting an industry that leads to inflation in land and housing prices, and requires the consumption of large amounts of natural resources

* The political, environmental and social impacts of a weak regulatory framework, where environmental laws are many but often outdated and almost never enforced.

Jamaica for Sale engages with a cross section of Jamaicans: workers who labour for low wages in the tourist industry; small hoteliers and providers of tourism services concerned about the future of the industry; fishermen affected by the increasing development of the coast; citizens alarmed at their exclusion from the beaches and decision making processes that allow for development in their communities; and environmentalists fighting to have the value of the Jamaica’s natural resources recognized.

The Jamaican Shower Posse (American Gangsters - Season 3)

A new documentary about the notorius Jamaican Shower Posse aired on BET in the USA earlier this month. The episode which is part of the third season of the popular 'American Gangster' series. The film looks at the gangs history in Jamaica and the US and focuses on the gangs leaders, in particular Vivien Blake who happens to be due for release from prison next month.

This is one of the most complex and violent shows in “American Gangster” history. The Shower Posse was born in the rough and ruthless ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica. From the ’70s well into the ’80s they were one of several gangs used by Jamaica’s mainstream political parties as tools for extortion and intimidation.

The Shower Posse expanded into the international smuggling of marijuana, sending shipments of ganga to secret air strips throughout the Florida Keys, but they didn’t become a truly feared force in this country until they became heavily involved in the trafficking of crack cocaine. Using Jamaica as a transportation stop for product moving from South America to the U.S., they then routed it to cities and towns from Miami all the way to Seattle, quickly becoming one of the most feared organizations on the streets.

The name Shower Posse grew out of their reputation for “showering” their opponents with indiscriminant sprays of gunfire from automatic weapons. Vicious shootouts were their specialty. Multiple homicides in Miami, New Jersey and other cities around the U.S. made them more feared than the Bloods and the Crips in many cities. This episode’s producer, Curtis Scoon, says the biggest challenge to putting this show together was the Shower Posse’s enduring reputation in Jamaica and the U.S.

“So violent is the Shower Posse’s history and reputation among the Caribbean immigrant community that even now, more than a decade after their reign in the US, getting people to talk on camera took some serious effort,” Scoon says. “The mere mention of the name still invokes unbelievable fear.”

The Ultimate Peter Tosh Experience (CD/DVD)

Release Date: January 27, 2009 (Run Time: 160 minutes)

The Ultimate Peter Tosh Experience collection will be released by Shanachie in January 2009. BUY A COPY HERE It is a 2xDVD, 1xCD, “multi-pac” with a thirty page booklet of commentary and rare photos that gives the first truly comprehensive look at Peter Tosh as a brilliant musical artist, significant political figure and charismatic and brave, though often misunderstood, human being. This dynamic set offers a stunning multi-media experience and delivers some of Peter Tosh’s most important work as well as rare material as follows: The audio CD presents fourteen outstanding Peter Tosh recordings including such classics as “Get Up Stand Up,” “Rastafari Is” and “Downpressor Man” as well as such rare or previously unreleased recordings as “Watcha Gonna Do” (with Eric Clapton) from 1974, recorded in Jamaica in the wake of Eric’s success with “I Shot The Sheriff,” a previously unreleased version of Peter’s signature tune “Legalize It,” “Babylon Queendom,” a previously unreleased mix of “Wanted Dread And Alive,” the early single “Arise Black Man” and more.

The first DVD presents the entire acclaimed documentary film Stepping Razor: Red X, which weaves interviews, performance footage and commentary in an atmospheric non-linear presentation leading up to the mystery of Peter’s murder, evoking the supernatural element that Peter felt was very much a part of his life. The second DVD brings together a selection of concert footage, including rare footage from the historic One Love Peace Concert in 1979, the No Nukes concert (where Peter was the only reggae performer) in 1981, Reggae Sunplash II from 1979 and his last concert in Kingston, Jamaica in 1983. Also included is previously unreleased interview footage of Peter with noted reggae historian Roger Steffens from 1979 and 1981.The thirty-page booklet includes essays about Peter from three people who knew him: Herbie Miller, who was Peter’s personal manager from 1975 -1981, reveals the mystical aspect of Peter’s persona; reggae authority Roger Steffens, whose friendship with Peter lasted from 1979 until Peter’s death, draws on reminiscences by Bunny Wailer to give a look a very personalized look at Peter; and Shanachie Entertainment’s General manager Randall Grass who first encountered Peter in 1979 as a music journalist and radio show host, gives an overview of Peter’s life rooted in his interviews of Peter. Included also are a selection of rare photos by celebrated photographer Adrian Boot, whose photographs of Bob Marley and other reggae artists have been published worldwide.Peter Tosh was born in Westmoreland parish, Jamaica on October 19, 1944. With an affinity for music virtually from birth, Peter sang in his local church choir, played piano, and taught himself to play guitar. He was raised by his aunt, having no contact with his father and little contact with his mother. By age fifteen he had moved to Kingston and, in the Trenchtown ghetto where he settled, met other musically-inclined youths such as Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, with whom he formed The Wailers in 1964.

With such hits as “Simmer Down” and “It Hurts To Be Alone,” The Wailers rapidly became the most popular vocal group on the island in the ska era. Though their success ebbed and flowed throughout the Sixties into the early Seventies, they made numerous outstanding recordings in the ska, rocksteady and reggae eras.

The international breakthrough came when Island Records’ Chris Blackwell signed them in 1972 and bankrolled their debut album Catch A Fire, the first true reggae album in the singles’ dominated genre. All three Wailers sang lead and harmony vocals, wrote songs and played instruments. Though sales were not initially large, The Wailers began to tour internationally and their follow-up album, Burnin’ garnered critical acclaim. Peter, who had been chafing at Island’s promotion of Bob Marley as front person of the group, As a result Peter decided to launch his solo career, as Bunny Wailer had done shortly before.Peter Tosh’s debut album
Legalize It garnered instant world-wide notoriety on release in 1976; the title track, which argued that marijuana should be legal, was banned as a single in Jamaica. Peter’s second album, Equal Rights, is a reggae classic was inspirational to liberation movements in Southern Africa, where it was banned. It included the anthem “Get Up Stand Up,” as well as uncompromising songs arguing against apartheid and for a pan-African identity.

At the One Love Peace Concert in Kingston in 1979, a concert ostensibly intended to bring warring political and gang factions together, Peter delivered an impassioned and accusatory diatribe directly to Prime Minister Michael Manley and Opposition leader Edward Seaga sitting in the audience. Peter was badly beaten by police within months of the incident. Mick Jagger happened to be in the audience and was moved to sign Peter to Rolling Stones Records, which afforded Peter a highly visible platform via the albums
Bush Doctor, Mystic Man, and Wanted Dread & Alive, as well as widespread international touring.

He was then signed to EMI Records directly, releasing
Mama Africa, highlighted by Peter’s unique interpretation of the rock ‘n’ roll anthem “Johnny B. Goode”; during this period Peter began using a guitar shaped like an AK-47 in concert. There followed a less active period as Peter recuperated physically and spiritually from the effects of beatings he had received as well as the pressure of being a target.

The recording of the
No Nuclear War album and planning of an extensive world-wide tour signaled his re-emergence. On the eve of the tour however, a former convict who Peter had been helping by providing shelter and money, confronted Peter, his common-life wife Marlene, and a number of compatriots at Peter’s house, with armed accomplices, demanding money. When Peter said he had no money there, they opened fire, killing Peter and others, with many wounded. Some speculated that it was an organized hit of the man who never back down, even in the face of armed authorities.“I know I’m wanted because of the evil forces,” Peter once mused. “But still I know there is another counter-force that counteract any evil force…the forces of righteousness is a billion times more powerful. I fear no evil...’cause Jah is with I.”

Victoria's Empire (DVD)

I missed this one last year, so hear it is now.
Victoria's Empire was a series broadcast on the BBC last year althought it was originally filmed in 2001. In one of the episodes she visited Jamaica, i seem to recall her going to meet with Freddie McGregor and going to his home for a chat.
Synopsis
Victoria Wood takes to the road on a quest to discover the old British Empire and legacy of Queen Victoria. The mammoth journey takes in the beauty and splendour of Hong King, Borneo, Ghana, Jamaica, Newfoundland, New Zealand and Australia before Victoria finishes in Zambia. During the trip, the comedienne examines cultural traditions and how each country has evolved since being colonised. VICTORIA’S EMPIRE is a trip worth taking; a journey of a lifetime seen through the eyes of one of our most popular celebrities.

The dvd is available in all good dvd shops.

Ross Kemp On Gangs - Jamaica (DVD)

Ross Kemp On Gangs

Jamaica, Colombia, East Timor, Poland
The Second Series
Region 2 DVD

Released 06-Oct-08

Ross Kemp and his award-winning team continue to seek out of the world's most notorious gangs, gaining rare access to notoriously impenetrable mobs. From Jamaica to Poland, Colombia to East Timor, Ross tracks down the criminals that lay down their law, finding out what makes them tick and what is being done to control them.

Jamaica

In Kingston, the murder capital of the world, gangs were historically aligned to Jamaica's two political parties. Ross discovers the gangs have moved away from their political roots and now engage in a bloody turf war, funded by drugs and driven by tit-for-tat reprisals, that has spawned a new generation of even more violent gangs.

Poland

Polish Neo-Nazi football hooligans have become some of the most feared gangs in Europe. Ross joins an elite police riot squad as they escort a notoriously violent hooligan gang and travels to Gorzow, a depressed and forgotten town, to meet the leaders of the brutal Stilon Fighters.

Colombia

In a country ravaged by war and synonymous with drugs and violence, Ross meets the people involved in the long and bitter guerrilla fighting - including the most secretive of them all, the Sicarios. These small groups, mostly under the employ of the paramilitaries, operate as 'hit-squads', killing whoever is considered a threat.

East Timor

More than two-thirds of Timorese youth are believed to be involved in gangs, ranging from martial arts groups to cult-like animist gangs. In the barrios of downtown Dili, Ross meets Sacred Heart and Seven Seven, two gangs in the midst of a deadly conflict, and witnesses their bizarre rituals, strict training and terrifying arsenal.

Teza - By Haile Gerima

'Teza' was premiered on the 2nd September, this is the latest film by film maker Haile Gerima, you may know Haile Gerima from his film's 'Adwa' or 'Sankofa'(1993)

He is also in development of two upcoming documentaries, one on the Maroons, and the second part of Adwa: 1896 (which will soon be on DVD/video) entitled, Children of Adwa Part II.

Synopsis
Teza, set in Ethiopia and Germany, chronicles the return of the African intellectual Anberber to his country of birth during the repressive Marxist regime of Haile Mariam Mengistu and the recognition of his own displacement and powerlessness at the dissolution of his people’s humanity and social values.
After Anberber spends several years in Germany studying medicine, he returns to Ethiopia only to find the country of his youth replaced by turmoil. His dream of using his craft to improve the health of Ethiopians is squashed by a military junta that uses scientists for their own political ends. Seeking the comfort of his countryside home, Anberber finds no shelter from violence. The solace that the memories of his youth provide is quickly replaced by the competing forces of the military and rebelling factions. Anberber must determine if he can bear the strain or piece together a life from the fragments that lay around him.

Director’s Note:
Teza provides me with the opportunity to tell the story of those African intellectuals who find themselves dislocated by a series of complicated historical circumstances. To evade the larger world, Anberber, the principal character of Teza, retreats to the land of his childhood – even if that becomes the ultimate end of his existence. But immediately he is faced with all the socio-economic ills of his birthplace, lacking a place to hide. Like Prometheus, he went to bring the fire of modernization from Europe … however the fire he has acquired can’t help him cure the ills of his village, a village so inundated with countless needs. Consequently, as I did in real life, he mentally escapes to his childhood memory, when things appeared fantastic and yet prosperous, mentally it becomes his last refuge from everything that is real.

Rasta's Paradise (Documentary)

Not sure if we have mentioned this before but the film is now complete and will be hitting the film festivals shortly, and hopefully we will get to see a dvd release before to long.

Rasta's Paradise is a fifty minute documentary film that combines music performances, informal improvisations, and interviews with Rastafarians during the 60th Birthday commemoration for Bob Marley in February 2005. It is all shot in Ethiopia starting in the capital Addis Ababa and then travels to Shashamene, the land that was given by Emperor Haile Selassie to Diaspora Africans. The documentary is constructed of segments with "live" music from the concerts during the celebrations, some improvised music on the bus to Shashemene, and drumming from the Drums of Rasta, along with a collage of chats with many Rastafarians in Shashemene. In the film Rastafari ways are explained as well as the interconnections between the Diaspora blacks, Africa, origin of the movement, connections to the Jamaican black leader Marcus Garvey, and the reason for repatriation to Ethiopia. With the divinity of His Imperial Majesty Emperor HaileSelassie a central rallying point amongst the various groups within the Rastafarian family, they all insist on and the need for peace in the human family. From the ancients of the Nyabinghi Order, to Dr. Desta, the managing director of the Bob Marley Foundation, to artists musicians like Teddy Dan, a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, to Ras King of the Drums of Rastas, entrepreneurs like Shaft, the owner of the Rift Valley Hotel, and Rasta teachers at the Jamaica Rastafari Development Community School in Shashemene; there is one striking aspect the commitment to developing Africa, their devotion to living the Rastafari way of life, and their actively message of justice, peace and "One Love.

"FILM MAKER'S BACKGROUND
Parine was born in Iraq to a professional and artistic family, however, they were forced to move frequently due to political turmoil in Middle East. After witnessing wars and revolution since three years old, Parine took advantage of the opportunity to study in the United States at the renown historic black institution, Howard University where shewas exposed to not only film education but Pan African identity.Parine was already sensitive to issues of human rights violation and annihilation through her growing years. After finishing her Masters in Film at Howard, she yearned to go home as wars escalated from the Gulf I to Gulf II and the after shocks that never seem to cease. With a new and strong perspective drawn from the African experience, Parine longed to return home to Iraq to help in some way change the conditions in her homeland.

INSPIRATION
Since the first time Parine heard Bob Marley, what she calls, "...like treble in my soul," she was anxious to know the meaning and origin of the lyrics. That is when Rastafari began to unfold for her. Traveling through "Exodus", "One Love", Get Up Stand Up", "War" she realized there was so much to know and even more to understand. She began her journey into Rastafari and their unique relationship with Ethiopia. The inspiration from the Movement brought her closer to the message of justice, peace and love. She was compelled to make a film that could expose the message and hopefully influence the human family. She also found a vehicle to help her people stay strong under the very terrible and present condition. Jaddo now found a way to help; hence she produced Rasta's Paradise a message of peaceful resistance from a heart of one love, where justice and reconciliation remain a reality to be achieved one day.

Eddy Grant Live in Concert (2x New CD/DVDs)

Great news, we have 2 deluxe edition albums being re-released by Eddy Grant next month, each album comes with a rare dvd concert performance. Eddy recently made a comback with an appearance at Glastonbury festival in the UK which went out to the nation and across europe to millions of viewers.

The first cd/dvd 'Killer On The Rampage', this is a excellent album, my own personal favourite, this one sold very well in the UK when it was first released. The DVD features previously unseen footage from a one-off full length Eddy Grant concert staged in Havana, Cuba in 1986 featuring a selection of cuts from the album alongside previous hits.

The second album is 'Walking on Sunshine' , the dvd features some amazing rare footage capturing Eddy Grant live. Live at Luna Park, Buenos Aires features an explosive pre-Falklands War concert including a young Diego Maradona joining Eddy on stage. Live in Milan, 1979, showcases Grant’s raw early energy and a super-tight band on a short festival set.

This 1979 dvd is the one thats got me excited! Don't miss it, out in shops 8th Oct.2008...

The Up Beat Movie (DVD Release 1st Nov.)

A new documentary on the history of the Ska scene in Utah will be released on DVD 1st Nov.2008, available from the official website http://www.theupbeatmovie.com/

**Update 15th Oct.
801 UNDERGROUND, a monthly podcast that promotes independent art, film and music in Utah, has featured THE UP BEAT in it's first episode. Go here www.icarusae.com/Site/Podcast/Podcast.html to hear the podcast, and be sure to subscribe through itunes to catch their future episodes.

Before THE UP BEAT premiered in Utah County, it received two great reviews:

"The Up Beat" is a fond valentine to the vanished, or at least critically endangered, sonic habitat across Utah where ska, the fusion of Caribbean sound with American jazz and R&B that originated in Eisenhower-era Jamaica, formerly flourished. The locals interviewed for the film suggest that, taking into account differences in market size, ska had a more vibrant, diverse presence in Utah than anywhere else in America."

Go here http://www.heraldextra.com/content/view/278416/147/ to read the entire review by Cody Clark of the Daily Herald.

"The film really finds its voice when the focus turns to Utah's own ska scene, when bands like Swim Herschel Swim, Stretch Armstrong and My Man Friday played to overflow crowds, and national acts—including a pre-breakout No Doubt and legends like the Skatalites—made sure to stop in Utah County. Local musicians and radio personalities provide their reminiscences about acts from Logan to St. George, supported by archival concert footage."

Go here http://www.slweekly.com/index.cfm?do=article.details&id=0563FB5C-14D1-13A2-9F74DF546A3D862D to read the entire review by Scott Renshaw of the Salt Lake City Weekly.
